Super Lice Prevention
What are SUPER lice and how do I prevent them?
“What are SUPER lice and what makes them different from regular lice?”
This is an important question and is a question we often get asked as professionals in the lice eradication business. SUPER lice are a new strain of head lice that have genetically mutated to form a resistance to lice-killing chemicals that until recently were able to kill lice and nits (lice eggs). With the occurrence of this new strain of SUPER lice, it has allowed an epidemic to emerge as over-the-counter products that once worked to kill lice now are deemed useless, allowing the lice to spread more readily throughout the community.
“How do I prevent SUPER lice from reoccurring?”
This is not an easy question to answer as some would think. Although there are a variety of measures you can take to prevent lice infestation in your family, nothing is 100% preventative. However, taking these steps will help keep the bugs away.
Keep hair pulled back for girls and keep hair short for boys.
Keeping loose hair pulled back can prevent lice from making a home in your child’s hair. Loose and long hair is more susceptible to infestation because there is more of it for a rouge louse to find its way.
Educate your kids in avoiding head to head contact and sharing of personal items.
Sharing is caring? Not so if you want to prevent super lice! It is important to educate your kids that sharing personal item such as sweaters, hats/helmets, pillows, hair accessories/brushes/combs, and even blankets, is not OK. For sleepovers, always have your child bring his or her own pillow.
Perform head check once a week.
Being diligent about checking your child’s hair once a week is key in preventing a super lice infestation. This is especially true following social gatherings such as sleepovers, birthday parties, camp, and sporting events where there could be head to head contact such as soccer, volleyball, and basketball.
Use all natural lice prevention products that contain tea tree oil, lavender, mint, citronella, rosemary, and other essential oils that deter lice.
There are a variety of prevention products on the market that are specific for preventing head lice that contain essential oils. These products include shampoo, conditioner and leave-in conditioning spray. They can be found on Amazon or at your local natural market.
Create a lice budget for future professional treatments.
Set up a Health Saving Account (HAS) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) with your insurance company for unexpected out-of-pocket health expenses like, lice treatments. These helpful budgeting tools because allow you to set aside money that will be available to you when lice strike your family during an unexpected time. Remember, the sooner you take care of a lice outbreak in your family the better the chance that they will spread from person to person.
